Reminiscence, August 1942.

Holograph personal reminiscence of the landing of U.S. Marines on Gavutu and Tanambogo Islands in August 1942, in preparation for the Battle of Guadalcanal. Bennink was boat commander in USS Heywood on convoy duty in the South Pacific. He describes the pre-landing bombing, the landing, the logistics, the Japanese aerial and land attacks, the injuries and the chaos of war, news of the Battle of Savo Island and evacuees of that battle on his ship.
